AAEX continues its Art&Sign Programme in 2023.

In collaboration with the Droichead Arts Centre, artists Johnny Corcoran, Julie Corcoran, Michael Stafford and Susan Farrelly, will provide a series of art workshops with ISL translation aimed at the deaf community, in which participants work with the artists to create artworks to be presented in one week exhibition at the Droichead arts centre in September.

Topics will include drawing, painting, sculpture, photography and other media.

Suitable for adults, including young adults aged 13+ (ages 13-15 must be accompanied by an adult participant).

Participation is free but booking will be required.

Details about the programme, including how to book, will be announced here and through our social media channels as they emerge. So watch this space!

The programme is kindly supported by the Creative Ireland Louth and Droichead Arts Centre

Art&Sign I and II

In 2022 AAEX provided several sets of ISL Art Classes in Dundalk and Drogheda targeting the deaf community, exploring line drawing, cast sculpture, photography, clay sculpture, spin art, mono printing, pencil drawing and more.

In addition to simply providing ISL supported art workshops in the area, the project also provided opportunities to collaborate and bridge gaps between the deaf community and artists, who so far had little exposure to ISL and how to communicate through it. Overall both artists and participants enjoyed the exchange and opportunity to learn from each other.

We are delighted to have received a Louth PPN Community Award for Arts & Culture for the project and also that through the project we got acquainted with artist Johnny Corcoran, himself a member of the deaf community, who lead one of the later workshops of the programme and will partake again in our proposed programme for 2023.

The AAEX artists involved were Susan Farrelly, who coordinated the project, Jane Campbell, Julie Corcoran, Bernhard Gaul, Catherine McCourt, Jebun Nahar and Geraldine Martin. Many thanks to our fantastic ISL interpreters Leah Murray and Vanessa Cunningham, as well as for the generous support by Creative Ireland Louth, An Táin Arts Centre, Droichead Arts Centre and Chime.
